Bottled Water: Where Does The Water Come From?
Bottled waters have grown in popularity in the past decade for many reasons – chief among them; its portability, easier access and use as well as safe enough to drink. However, curiosity remains in the minds of most people thus causing them to question where exactly the water they consume in bottled waters comes from. Recently, it is no longer a matter of simply being curious but also the concern of knowing if what they drink is safe for the body.
Essentially, there are various answers as to where bottled waters come from. Basically, it all comes down to the types of bottled waters when identifying where these waters come from. There are different types of bottled water and each type has a different source. However, it is good to understand that bottled waters always (unless otherwise noted) undergo treatment, hence the finished products are safe to consume.
One type of bottled water is mineral water. Bottled waters containing mineral water consists of at least 250 parts per million total dissolved solids (such as silica). This natural water comes from an underground source that is produced from a spring or a well.
Another type of mineral water is spring water. This water is taken directly from a spring that naturally flows on the surface of the earth.
The next type of bottled water is Sparkling water. Water is naturally carbonated since it consists of the same amount of carbon dioxide that it originally has since it was taken from its source. For this type, water is produced from a spring or well and even if the level of carbon dioxide is reduced throughout the treatment process, it can be replaced with artificial carbon dioxide but not more than its carbon dioxide level it had when it is taken from its source.
Artesian Water is yet another type of bottled water taken from an artesian well. An artesian well requires an aquifer; an underground layer of rock that holds and transmits water, which sends the water through a natural filtration process. EPA noted that artesian waters are often very pure as the rock layers hinder contamination movement in the water.
Well water or ground water is a type of water that comes from, well… a well. It is good that this water is purified as this kind of water will more likely be naturally predisposed to contain contaminants from groundwater runoff from surrounding sources.
Finally – purified water. This water is produced via the process of distillation, reverse osmosis and other kinds of water treatments that meets the criteria of purified water in the country. There is nothing special about this water – it is in fact, tap water, but through the special processes the water undergoes it is made pure and different from standard tap water.
These different types of bottled waters assure safety of source, consumption, not to mention that waters are treated after it is generated from its source prior to bottling. We hope this will help consumers realize the value of consuming and choosing bottled waters the next time they are in the store. And to realize that the water in the bottles is more than just tap water – via either it’s unique source, or purification process it achieves a degree of enhancement you simply do not get from your kitchen faucet
