Internet Dating Safety – 5 Things To Bring Along On The First Date

by Cathy Svedka

First dates can be really exciting. You get to buy a new outfit and get all dressed up to go out to a new place. You get to make new conversation with a new person for the first time. You get to take a chance at your future, a whole world of possibilities laid out in front of you. But first dates can also be a little scary– and not just because your date has bad hygiene and a laughs like a hyena.

Preparing for an anonymous first date is a requirement. Even the nicest of guys might be a lot different than you expect, and if you are a little more prepared, it will help a lot.

There are lots of articles you can find online about dating safety, so don’t just stop here. However, this article focuses on different things to bring on the date to keep you safe.

A mobile phone. A cell phone lands in the number one spot for a very important reason: if you meet up with the wrong person, your cell phone can make the difference between getting home safely and not getting home at all. Be sure to have a phone on hand to call for help if you need it, and to call somebody to pick you up if it comes to that. Before you leave the house, double-check that your battery is fully charged and everything is working fine. You don’t want to be caught without this important tool at an inopportune moment.

A reliable friend’s phone number. If you’ve driven a car to a date that’s gone horribly wrong and are worried that your date might follow you home –something that, unfortunately, occasionally does happen– be sure you have somebody you can contact to meet you there when you arrive. Call them in the car on the way home, and request that they either meet you at your home, or that they allow you to come to their house until you’re sure the coast is clear. Sure, it may sound a little dramatic, but… better safe than sorry.

Breath mints or gum. When dates are getting nervous, it is a common problem to continue drinking too much to take your mind off things. Having mints or chewing a piece of gum can quench that thirst.

A guide or map. Nothing is more dangerous on a date than walking home late at night and not knowing where to go. A simple map can save you in a lot of ways.

A car. If you have your own vehicle, it is the most convenient thing ever on a bad date. Walking alone in the dark sucks, so that alone is nice. You can get home faster and safer.
