The Things You Should Know About Hypnosis

Hypnosis and its arm, hypnotherapy, have been the focus of several myths created by layman’s imagination. Some regard them to be black magic whereas others reject them as pseudo science. Following are some of the popular myths about hypnosis and the truth behind them.

There is no mysticism or rituals involved in hypnosis. It borders more on the science of psychology and is very easy to practice for anyone who is prepared to learn it. People refuse to acknowledge hypnosis even after watching participants effectively undergoing it in public shows. They hold that the people who have undergone hypnosis are mentally not powerful enough to withstand the impact of the practitioner. But nothing could be more distant from the truth. Even mentally strong people can fall under the charms of a specialist hypnosis practitioner.

That hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness is another myth that has been circulating for quite some time now. A hypnotized person is completely aware of his surroundings. That individual is just in a relaxed state where the concentration levels are very high and the person can receive new inputs easily.

Another misconception, which has been propagated by some researchers, claims that hypnosis can be applied on merely 5% of humans. The scientists are to some extent true in their own way, because they tried hypnotising their subjects by the same hypnosis technique without acknowledging individual differences in nature and temperament. One hypnosis procedure for all is not a workable solution as different people fall under different character types, and thus respond to different techniques.

Meditation and hypnosis are often confused with each other. However, meditation is essentially a personal feeling that has got nothing to do with communication, while communication is a fundamental part of any successful hypnosis. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. Trance is again a state of mind sans any communication, whereas communication forms the very foundation of the hypnosis technique.

It is often believed that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot bring changes in appearance or in behavioural patterns of a person. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is abnormal to the body. But by mentally conditioning an individual to give up addictive habits like overeating and chain smoking, and by heightening one’s inspiration levels, hypnosis can bring about important physical alterations in a person and pave the way for a healthier body.

If a person believes in all the wrong notions that exist regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t go for a hypnotic session, then he will himself block his way to a happier and healthier life.
